Summer is usually rocker David Toole's time to concentrate on his band, Identity X. Erin Lindsey Krom's only musical theater work in two years has been in winter, for Pittsburgh CLO's "A Musical Christmas Carol."

It's also time for a Front Porch Theatricals musical to roll into the New Hazlett Theater, and for roles in "The Last Five Years," Mr. Toole and Ms. Krom were happy to change their routines.

The Jason Robert Brown musical opening Friday tells of love won and lost in a series of songs sung by struggling actress Cathy, who relives the relationship moving back in time, and Jamie, an up-and-coming writer, who tells it from the start. The musical's recent resurgence includes the 2015 movie starring Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan.

"It's been a dream role of mine, on the top of my coffee-stained bucket list for a decade," Ms. Krom said.

Sometimes, a couple gets into trouble because they come at the relationship from opposite directions.

That's basically the hook behind Tony-award winning playwright Jason Robert Brown's musical “The Last Five Years.”

Front Porch Theatricals will launch its 2015 season May 22 with the show at the New Hazlett Theateron the North Side.

​

Based loosely on Brown's first failed marriage, the show uses an unconventional form in which husband Jamie Wellerstein and his wife, Cathy Hiatt, tell the story of their relationship in reverse timelines.

Summer and romance go together so well that local theater company Front Porch Theatricals kicks off its season May 22 with “The Last Five Years,” a piece detailing five years in the lives of a New York City couple in their 20s. Each half of the duo tells his and her story in varying order — Cathy Hiatt from most recent to the beginning, while Jamie Wellerstein addresses the start to the end — each sharing quirky moments that relationships build upon.

“I could shove an ice pick in my eye, I could eat some fish from last July. But it wouldn’t be as awful as a summer in Ohio, without cable, hot water, Vietnamese food or you,” Cathy, played by Erin Lindsey Krom, romantically reflects on Jamie, played by David Toole.
