FRONT PORCH THEATRICALS  INTERN PROGRAM

Overview

The Intern Program at Front Porch Theatricals provides hands-on training for undergraduate or graduate students, some high school students, or early-career professionals in the Pittsburgh area who wish to get involved in the dynamic environment of a growing theatre company. The goals of our program are to 1) help develop marketable skills for future jobs or study in theatre, 2) facilitate opportunities for making professional contacts, and 3) provide insight into the career paths of various professions in the theatre. Interns gain practical experience and valuable guidance in their careers.

 

Front Porch Interns work alongside professionals during the production of one musical. All interns have the opportunity to attend the Pittsburgh auditions, first rehearsal, designer run-throughs, and opening night performance and reception. Additionally, interns will receive two complimentary tickets to any performance. Interns may be required to usher for at least three performances and will report to the House Manager at the New Hazlett Center for Performing Arts. All internships are paid a stipend at the end of the performance run.

Summer 2017

Musical: Big Fish

Venue: The New Hazlett Center for the Arts

Rehearsal Spaces: Pittsburgh Musical Theater  - West End, Pittsburgh

Rehearsal Dates: July 24 - August 17

Performance Dates: August 18-27

 

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR

April and May meetings

Evening rehearsals from April 24 (6-10PM)

July and August (July meetings)

Evening Rehearsals from July 24 - August 14 (including weekends which may be during the day also)

Tech week - daily rehearsals August 14-17

The Assistant Director will shadow the director and may need to work with part of the cast - only for the summer show. The AD may get involved in researching the background of the show show and act as dramaturg. During rehearsals, the AD will take notes and coordinate with the Stage Manager on direction, blocking, notes and changes that need to made. The director will act as mentor and coach to the AD. 

 

ADMINISTRATIVE INTERN (2 positions - both shows)

April through August

Five to eight hours per week

The marketing intern reports directly to the Producers. Some duties will include: publishing auditions, contacting the media, using Photoshop, updating the website, assistance with grant writing, database management, and other duties as requested. This position offers excellent insight for someone interested in non-profit or arts administration, marketing and public relations.

The community and media relations intern is responsible for soliciting and supporting group sales, communicating with the media, and developing and delievering promotional materials.  All functions will be cooridinated with the marketing intern.

 

STAGE MANAGEMENT INTERN

April 24 through May 28 and July 24 through August 27. 

Evening rehearsals during the weekday; daytime rehearsals during weekends

Tech week rehearsals: Hours TBD

Available for the run of the show, and for Auditions and again in August for summer show. 

Assist the Production Stage Manager and the Director with responsibilities including: running auditions in February, staying “on book” during rehearsal, recording blocking into script, and other duties as requested. This position is ideal for someone who is interested in acting, directing, or stage managing.

 

PRODUCTION INTERN

April 24 through May 29 and July 24 through August 27. 

The production intern will assist the production manager during rehearsals (evenings) and technical director with set construction starting July 21st (daytime). This position is designed for someone interested in many aspects of the production, including technical direction, production management, directing or set design.

 

LIGHTING INTERN (2 positions each)

April 24 through May 28 and July 24 through August 27. 

Spot Operators, potentially a lighting board operator

 

SOUND INTERN (1 position each show)

April 24 through May 28 and July 24 through August 27. 

Backstage support for mics and battery packs with actors

 

SCENE SHOP INTERN (2 positions)

April 24 through May 28 and July 24 through August 27.   (daytime)

The scene shop intern works as part of the team led by Technical Director. Responsibilities include set construction and work with lighting, electrics and sound. Experience with carpentry a plus. The position is perfect for someone interested in technical direction, carpentry, set design, lighting design or sound design.

 

COSTUME INTERN

April 24 through May 28 and July 24 through August 27. 

The costume intern will assist the costume designer with the following: fittings, obtaining costume pieces, sewing and repairs, inventory and labeling, and other duties as requested. If available, the costume intern may assist during performances with pre-show preparation and dressing.

 

CHOREOGRAPHY INTERN

July 24 (or earlier) through August 27. 

The choreography intern will assist the choreographer with taking notes and demonstration during rehearsals. The position is ideal for someone studying dance, choreography, or musical theater.
