Front Porch Internships

The Intern Program at Front Porch Theatricals provides hands-on training for undergraduate or graduate students, some high school students, or early-career professionals in the Pittsburgh area who wish to get involved in the dynamic environment of a growing theatre company. The goals of our program are to:

​

 1) Help develop marketable skills for future jobs or study in theatre

​

2) Facilitate opportunities for making professional contacts  

​

3) provide insight into the career paths of various professions in the theatre. Interns gain practical experience and valuable guidance in their careers.

​

Front Porch Interns work alongside professionals during the production of a musical. All interns can attend the first rehearsal, designer run-throughs, and opening night performance and reception. Additionally, interns will receive two complimentary tickets to be used during the first weekend of the show.  Interns will be assigned to a member of the production team, but additionally will be accountable to the FPT producers.  All internships are paid a stipend at the end of the performance run.

 

HOW TO APPLY:

All candidates must be from Pittsburgh, attend school in Pittsburgh or have a demonstrable Pittsburgh connection. Candidates must submit a cover letter, resume, 1-2 references and work samples where applicable, and must indicate any conflicts anticipated based upon the dates provided for the show for which they are applying.  The online application form must be completed.​

 

Expectations:

All interns are expected to conduct themselves in a mature, responsible manner, show up on time and be respectful of the entire professional team and other interns. In addition to meeting the requirements of their specific area of concentration, all interns are expected to participate in the tech week, load-in and strike at the end of the run.

The mandatory dates for A My Name is Still Alice are:

April 22nd (first rehearsal on April 24 at 6 pm)

May 13-17 (tech week days and evenings)

May 25th (strike – 4 pm to 10 pm)

Rehearsal dates are April 24-May 12th

Show dates are May 17-26

 

The mandatory dates  for Bandstand are: 

        

July 22nd (first rehearsal 6 pm)

August 12-16 (tech week days and evenings)

August 25th (strike – 4 pm to 10 pm)

Rehearsal dates are July 22-August 11th

Show dates are August 16-26

Here are the intenship positions available:

​

ADMINISTRATIVE INTERN (2 positions - both shows)

April through August

Five to eight hours per week

The Administrative Intern will report directly to the Producers and Creative Marketing Director. Duties may include but are not limited to updating website and social media, contacting media outlets, assisting in video recordings for vlog posts and advertisements, database management, creating lobby displays, box office assistance, and other duties as assigned. The ideal Administrative Intern will have an interest or experience in theatre management, arts administration, and/or marketing and PR. The Administrative Intern’s schedule will be discussed with the Producers directly but should not exceed 15 hours per week typically during evening hours. Required attendance: First rehearsal and all performances, load-in and strike during tech week.

 

STAGE MANAGEMENT INTERN ( 2 positions – both shows)

April through May or July through August 

Evening rehearsals on weekdays; daytime rehearsals on weekends

Tech week rehearsals: Hours TBD

Available for the run of the show.

The Assistant Stage Management Intern will report directly to the Stage Manager and Assistant Stage Manager for the duration of rehearsals, tech, and all performances. ASM Interns will assist the Stage Manager in rehearsals recording blocking, helping with set shifts, staying on book and other duties as requested. During tech rehearsals and performances, ASM Interns will become part of the running crew and will assist in a smooth performance. The ideal Assistant Stage Management Intern will have an interest or experience in stage management and/or technical theatre. Assistant Stage Management Interns will need to attend all rehearsals, tech rehearsals, performances, and strike, typically evening and weekend hours. Required attendance: All rehearsals, load in, tech week, all performances, and strike.

 

PRODUCTION INTERN

April through May and July through August

The production intern will assist the production manager during rehearsals (evenings) and technical director with set construction and possibly painting starting April 22 or July 22 (daytime). This position is designed for someone interested in many aspects of the production, including technical direction, production management, directing or set design.

 

 LIGHTING INTERN (2 positions each)

April through May or July through August 

The Lighting Intern will report directly to the Lighting Designer and Master Electrician for the duration of tech rehearsals, performances, and strike. Lighting Interns will assist the Lighting Designer and Master Electrician with hang, focus, and other duties as assigned. Lighting Interns will also serve as spot light operators where applicable and in that case must be 18 years of age Ideal Lighting Interns have an interest or experience in Lighting Design, Electrics, and/or Spotlight and Board Operation. Lighting Interns schedules will be determined by the Lighting Designer and Master Electrician but will need to attend load in, tech week, all performances, and strike. Required attendance: First rehearsal, designer run, load in, tech week, all performances, and strike.

 

SOUND INTERN (1 position each show)

April through May or July through August .

The Sound Intern will report directly to the Sound Designer for the duration of rehearsals, performances and strike. The Sound Intern will assist the Sound Designer in speaker placement, orchestra and sitzprobe set up, sound checks, distribution of wireless microphones, and other duties as requested. Ideal Sound Interns have an interest or experience in Sound Design, Sound Engineering, or Music Production. Sound Intern schedules will be determined by the Sound Designer but will need to attend Sitzprobe, load in, tech week, all performances, and strike. Required attendance: First rehearsal, designer run, sitzprobe, load in, tech week, all performances, and strike.

 

 SCENE SHOP INTERN (2 positions)

April through May or July through August (daytime)

Scene Shop Interns will report directly to the Technical Director and Props Master for the duration of build, load in, tech week, all performances, and strike.  Interns will assist the Technical Director in the building, painting and loading of the scenery and props. Interns may also serve as running crew where necessary. Ideal Scene Shop Interns will have an interest or experience in set construction, scenic painting, props, set design or technical theatre in general. Intern schedules will be determined by the Technical Director and Props Master for but will need to attend build dates during the day, load in, tech rehearsals, all performances, and strike during evenings. Required attendance: First rehearsal, designer run, load in, tech week, all performances, and strike.

HAIR AND MAKE-UP INTERN (1 or 2 positions)

May and August

The Hair and Make-up intern will work closely with the mentor professional to assist in implementing the designs for hair and wigs for the cast. Once the designs are complete, the intern will be expected to be at every performance to assist with the wig installation and work through any issues to ensure that the actor looks exactly like the design from the professional. The Hair and Make-up intern will be expected to attend all load-in, strike and tech rehearsals as well. 

 

COSTUME INTERN (1 or 2 posaitions)

April through May or July through August 

 

​The Costume Intern will report directly to the Costume Designer and will assist them with fittings, obtaining costume pieces, sewing and repairs, laundry, inventory and labeling, as well as other assigned duties. The Costume Intern will also serve as a dresser during the performances. Ideal Costume Interns have an interest or experience in Costume Design, Hair and Make Up, or Wardrobe Supervising. The Costume Intern schedule will be determined by the Costume Designer but will need to attend load in, all tech rehearsals, all performances, and strike. Required attendance: First rehearsal, designer run, load in, tech week, all performances, and strike.

 

CHOREOGRAPHY INTERN

April through the production in August (Bandstand) only.

The Choreography Intern will report directly to the Director and Choreographer  for the duration of rehearsals and performances. The Choreography Intern will assist the Choreographer with taking notes and demonstrations during rehearsals. The ideal Choreography Intern has an interest or experience in Dance, Choreography, or Musical Theatre. The Choreography Intern schedule will be determined by the Choreography but will be expected to attend all rehearsals, typically evening and weekend hours. Required attendance: All rehearsals

 MUSIC INTERN

April through May or July through August 

The Music Intern will report directly to the Music Director for the duration of rehearsals and performances. The Music Intern will assist the Music Director with taking notes and tracking assignments, reviewing scores for orchestra, and assisting with scheduling during rehearsals and Sitzprobe. The ideal Music Intern has an interest or experience in Music, Choreography, or Musical Theatre. The Music Intern schedule will be determined by the Music Director but will be expected to attend all rehearsals, typically evening and weekend hours. Required attendance: All rehearsals
